Chang’e is the Chinese moon goddess, famed for her beauty and for living in the Moon Palace with her companion, the Moon Rabbit (Yu Tu). She is the wife of the heroic archer Hou Yi and a central figure in Chinese mythology, later lending her name to China’s modern lunar exploration program.

In the most popular legend, Hou Yi saved the world by shooting down nine of ten suns and received an elixir of immortality. While he was away, Chang’e drank the elixir to prevent it from being stolen, causing her to ascend to the Moon, where she chose to live to remain close to her husband—an event that became the origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Older versions instead portray her as stealing the elixir and fleeing to the Moon.

Chang’e also appears in Journey to the West as a resident of the Moon’s Vast-Cold Palace, connected to the fall of Zhu Bajie and later to an episode involving her Jade Rabbit, whom she ultimately retrieves before Sun Wukong can kill it.
