Xiwangmu, known as the Queen Mother of the West, is a major goddess in Chinese religion and mythology, whose origins go back to ancient times and even appear in Shang dynasty oracle bone inscriptions. She is traditionally portrayed as a powerful mother goddess and later became closely associated with Taoism, where she is revered as a high-ranking immortal and symbol of immortality, prosperity, and eternal bliss.

Her name literally means “Queen Mother of the West”, and she is often depicted as presiding over a paradisiacal realm on Mount Kunlun, surrounded by a retinue of female spirits and celestial attendants. One of her most famous attributes is the Peaches of Immortality, mythical fruits that ripen every 3,000 years and grant eternal life to those who eat them.

In early traditions she could be depicted with fierce animal features, but over time her image became more benevolent and majestic, embodying cosmic authority, longevity, and feminine power. Her cult and imagery influenced neighbouring cultures and remained important in art, literature, and religious practice throughout Chinese history.
