Mary Henry survives a car accident in Kansas when the vehicle she is riding in plunges off a bridge into a river during a reckless road race. Although presumed dead, she mysteriously emerges from the water hours later with no memory of how she survived.

She relocates to Salt Lake City to work as a church organist, but soon begins experiencing disturbing visions of a pale, ghoulish figure known as “The Man,” often near an abandoned lakeside pavilion. As her hallucinations intensify, she feels increasingly detached from reality—at times becoming invisible and unheard by others. Her organ playing grows eerie and trance-like, leading the church minister to accuse her of sacrilege and demand her resignation. She also rejects the romantic advances of a neighbor, John, who eventually believes she is mentally unstable.

Drawn repeatedly to the abandoned pavilion, Mary encounters visions of dancing ghouls and a ghostly version of herself. After a final terrifying pursuit by these figures, she disappears. Authorities later find only her footprints near the pavilion.

In the film’s final twist, the car from the original accident is recovered in Kansas—with Mary’s body still inside—revealing that she never truly survived and had been a restless spirit all along.
