After a car plunges off a bridge in Kansas, Mary Henry mysteriously survives and later moves to Salt Lake City to work as a church organist. Soon after arriving, she begins seeing a pale, hollow-eyed figure known only as “The Man.” He appears silently watching her near an abandoned lakeside pavilion and in mirrors and visions, his presence growing more persistent and ominous.

The Man is strongly tied to the deserted pavilion, a once lively place now decaying and forbidden. He appears as a leader among ghostly figures who seem to exist in a shadow world overlapping Mary’s own. As Mary’s isolation deepens, The Man seems to beckon her toward this other realm, appearing whenever she feels most detached from the living. During her trances at the church organ, she envisions him and other ghouls dancing in the pavilion, as if inviting her to join them.

In the climax, Mary is drawn back to the pavilion, where The Man and his fellow ghouls fully reveal themselves. She sees a ghoul version of herself partnered with The Man in a macabre dance, suggesting she belongs among them. When she tries to flee, The Man leads the pursuit that overwhelms her.

The final revelation—that Mary’s body remained in the submerged car all along—confirms The Man was not a hallucination but a figure of death, guiding her spirit to accept its place among the dead.
