Catherine (Cathy) Earnshaw is a central character in Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. Raised at Wuthering Heights with her brother Hindley, Catherine forms an intense, almost spiritual bond with the orphan Heathcliff, whom her father brings home. Their shared wildness and deep emotional connection shape much of the novel’s conflict.

After staying at Thrushcross Grange with the refined Linton family, Catherine becomes more socially polished and begins a relationship with Edgar Linton. Though she passionately loves Heathcliff—famously declaring that their souls are the same—she chooses to marry Edgar for social advancement, believing marriage to Heathcliff would degrade her. Overhearing part of her confession, Heathcliff leaves, devastated.

When Heathcliff returns years later, his presence reignites Catherine’s emotional turmoil. Torn between her husband and her soulmate, she spirals into psychological and physical decline. Pregnant and increasingly delirious, she shares one final, intense reunion with Heathcliff before dying shortly after giving birth to her daughter, Cathy.

Even in death, Catherine’s presence dominates the story. Her ghost is said to haunt the moors and Heathcliff himself, symbolizing their undying bond. Ultimately, Heathcliff is buried beside her, uniting them in death as they could not be fully united in life.
