Tambu is the fierce and mystical guardian of her African village, distrustful of foreign airmen and guided by powerful juju. When German forces threaten the region, she challenges the outsiders’ claims of “magic” and ultimately becomes the true supernatural force in the story. After apparently sacrificing herself by throwing herself into a fire, Tambu returns as a spectral presence, guiding injured Flight Commander Lansil to awaken, avoid an enemy trap, and lead a successful attack against German aircraft. Though villagers believe she has risen from the dead, Tambu’s role remains ambiguous—spirit, vision, or legend, but her actions directly save the squadron.
