Caroline Beaufort Frankenstein is the devoted wife of Alphonse Frankenstein and mother of Victor Frankenstein in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. She is the daughter of Beaufort, a once-wealthy merchant who falls into poverty. After Beaufort’s health declines and he dies, Caroline—who had been supporting and caring for him through difficult times—is taken to Geneva by Alphonse, a close family friend. Two years later, she marries him.

Caroline becomes a loving and selfless mother. She helps raise Victor and later cares for Elizabeth, whom the family adopts, along with her younger sons, Ernest and William. Deeply dedicated to her children, she is actively involved in their upbringing and happiness.

Her compassion ultimately leads to her death: she contracts scarlet fever while nursing Elizabeth back to health and dies when Victor is seventeen, just before he leaves for university. Caroline is remembered as gentle, nurturing, and devoted to her family.
