Mnemosyne is a Titaness in Greek mythology, daughter of Uranus (Sky) and Gaia (Earth), and the goddess of memory. She is best known as the mother of the nine Muses, fathered by Zeus: Calliope (epic poetry), Clio (history), Euterpe (music), Erato (love poetry), Melpomene (tragedy), Polyhymnia (hymns), Terpsichore (dance), Thalia (comedy), and Urania (astronomy). In some sources, her parentage is alternatively given as Zeus and Clymene.

In myth, Zeus slept with Mnemosyne for nine nights, producing the Muses. She presided over memory, including a river in Hades—counterpart to Lethe—whose waters allowed initiates in Orphism to retain memories across reincarnations. In oral epic poetry, poets invoked Mnemosyne at the start of recitations to aid accurate memory, appearing in works like the Iliad and Odyssey.

Although minor in terms of widespread worship, Mnemosyne was venerated in specific sanctuaries and cults, including Mount Helicon, Lebadeia, and the cult of Asclepius. She was sometimes depicted alongside her daughters, the Muses, and occasionally considered one of the Muses herself. In oracular rituals, she was associated with remembering visions and revelations, emphasizing her role as a divine embodiment of memory and the preservation of knowledge in Greek culture.
