Gullveig is a female figure in Norse mythology, appearing in the Poetic Edda’s Völuspá. She is associated with the conflict between the Æsir and Vanir. In the poem, she is speared by the Æsir and burned three times in Odin’s hall, yet survives each time and is reborn. After her third rebirth, she becomes known as Heiðr, practicing seiðr (magic) and acting as a powerful völva (seeress).

Scholars suggest she may be linked to the goddess Freyja, symbolize gold itself, or that her mistreatment by the Æsir contributed to the Æsir–Vanir War. Her name Gullveig likely combines “gold” with an uncertain second element, possibly meaning “power,” “intoxicating drink,” or “lady,” while Heiðr means “bright” or “clear.”

She is solely attested in Völuspá, where she is described as surviving repeated burnings and performing magic, delighting other women with her abilities.
