Calafia is a pagan warrior queen who rules over the mythical Island of California, a land populated exclusively by fierce Amazon-like women and famed for its riches and strength. As queen, Calafia is portrayed as courageous, physically powerful, ambitious, and beautiful, commanding a fleet of ships and an army of women warriors, as well as a trained legion of mythical griffins.

In the story, she is persuaded by a Muslim ally, Radiaro, to lead her forces against Christian defenders at Constantinople. Though initially triumphant in deploying her griffins, the creatures prove uncontrollable and attack both friend and foe. Amid fierce combat, Calafia personally engages Christian leaders. Eventually she is defeated and taken prisoner.

While in captivity, Calafia recognizes the beauty and order of European society and converts to Christianity. She marries a Christian knight named Talanque and returns with a reorganized army to California, now integrating both sexes and establishing a new dynasty. Her character embodies themes of martial valor, cultural encounter, and ideological transformation within the chivalric framework of the novel.
