Penelope “Penny” Worth is the compassionate Quaker daughter of Thomas Worth, Penny believes deeply in nonviolence and moral reform. She falls in love with Quirt and becomes the moral force guiding his transformation. Though hurt by misunderstandings involving Lila, Penny remains steadfast in her faith that Quirt can change. In the end, she helps him renounce violence and embrace a new life.
