Tara, the strong-willed daughter of John Carter and Dejah Thoris, rulers of the Martian city-state of Helium. Proud and independent, Tara initially dismisses Gahan of Gathol, a prince who hopes to win her hand.

While flying alone, Tara is caught in a violent storm that carries her far from home. After surviving an attack by banths (Martian lions), she is captured by the strange Kaldanes, intelligent head-like creatures who control headless humanoid bodies called Rykors. The Kaldanes plan to keep Tara as food, but she earns the friendship of one of them, Ghek, through her courage and singing.

Meanwhile, Prince Gahan searches for Tara and eventually rescues her, though she does not recognize him because of his changed appearance. He hides his identity and introduces himself as a mercenary named Turan. Together with Ghek, they travel to the city of Manator, where Tara’s survival and bravery are tested when she and her companions are captured and forced into deadly arena games.

Throughout the story, Tara grows from a proud princess into a courageous and resourceful heroine, learning humility, resilience, and the true character of the man who loves her.
