Thetis was a sea nymph (one of the Nereids) and the mother of the hero Achilles. Originally desired by Zeus and Poseidon, she was instead married to the mortal Peleus after a prophecy revealed that her son would surpass his father, making her too dangerous a partner for the gods. Their wedding famously helped spark events leading to the Trojan War.

In myth, Thetis is a powerful and compassionate figure who can shapeshift and often aids gods and heroes; she notably protects and supports her son Achilles throughout the Trojan War, even persuading Zeus to intervene on his behalf and obtaining divine armor for him. Her attempts to make Achilles immortal ultimately fail, leaving his heel vulnerable, and she remains a central maternal and divine presence in his story.
