Pietro the hunchback is a physically deformed outcast who lives in or around a medieval Spanish castle. Despite his appearance, he falls in love with the castle owner’s daughter. After her father refused to let Pietro marry the girl, he abducts her and takes her to the hills. Eventually she falls deeply in love with her captor.

The daughter is initially portrayed as noble-born and sheltered, but compassionate and willing to defy her father for love. After Pietro is hanged by her father's men, she is overwhelmed by grief, and in a tragic turn, she becomes physically transformed into a hunchback as well and dies too.

The story ends symbolically: both lovers die, and a year later two gargoyles resembling them appear atop the castle, suggesting their love has been immortalized in stone as eternal guardians or memorial figures.

* The cover of The Beyond issue 24 features a unnamed hunchback character bringing an army of gargoyles to life to smash all who stand in their way. Unlike the previous issue, no interior story in this issue features hunchbacks or gargoyles.
