Gerhilde is one of the Valkyries in Die Walküre, part of the larger cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen by Richard Wagner. She is a daughter of the god Wotan and one of the warrior maidens whose role is to gather fallen heroes from battlefields and bring them to Valhalla, where they will help defend the gods. Gerhilde is written for a soprano voice and appears primarily in the Valkyrie ensemble scenes, particularly in Act III during the famous “Ride of the Valkyries.” While she does not have a major individual storyline like Brünnhilde, she contributes to the powerful group presence of the Valkyries.
