Septimia Zenobia was a 3rd-century queen of the Palmyrene Empire in Syria who rose to power after her husband, King Odaenathus, died. As regent for her son, she effectively ruled Palmyra and expanded its control dramatically, conquering much of the Roman East, including Egypt, between 270 and 271.
Although she initially remained nominally loyal to Rome, she eventually declared independence and had her son proclaimed emperor. This led to conflict with the Roman emperor Aurelian, who defeated her forces, besieged Palmyra, and captured Zenobia in 272. She was taken to Rome and lived there in exile until her death sometime after 274.
Zenobia is remembered as an educated and capable ruler who fostered a multicultural, tolerant, and intellectually vibrant court. Her dramatic rise and fall made her a lasting historical and cultural figure, especially as a symbol of pride in Syrian history.
