Ultra Violet, whose real name is Violet Ray, debuted in 1947’s My Date #1 as a subversive take on the traditional 1940s "bobby-soxer." She is a quirky, daydreaming teenager who discovers she can shape-shift into any human form. Rather than following the typical superhero path of fighting crime, Violet uses her abilities for self-serving and humorous ends, such as snubbing bad dates, pranking her teachers, or mingling with celebrities.

What made her stories stand out from the era’s standard romance comics was their "hip" tone and rejection of typical melodrama. While most stories focused on heartbreak and propriety, Ultra Violet was written with an authentic, slang-heavy voice and a protagonist who was unapologetically stubborn and manipulative. However, despite its progressive humor, the comic occasionally succumbed to the era’s restrictive social norms. This is seen in a featured plot where Violet’s attempt to help a friend backfires, ending with a regressive moral about avoiding glamour that contradicts the comic's otherwise rebellious spirit.
