Elizabeth Parris, often called Betty Parris, was one of the young girls whose accusations helped spark the Salem witch trials. Born in Boston in 1682, she was the daughter of Salem minister Samuel Parris and lived with her family, cousin Abigail Williams, and the enslaved woman Tituba in Salem. In 1692, Betty and other girls began displaying strange behavior that many believed was caused by witchcraft. After attempts at folk magic and fortune-telling, Betty accused Tituba and others of witchcraft, helping trigger a wave of accusations that led to the executions of 20 people. Betty later claimed to dream of the Devil before being sent to live with another family, where her symptoms ended. After the trials, she never publicly withdrew her accusations. She later married Benjamin Baron, had four children, and died in Massachusetts in 1760.
