Lady Kai, also known as Kaihime, was a renowned female warrior from Japan’s Sengoku period and the daughter of Narita Ujinaga, retainers of the Later Hōjō clan. Celebrated for both her beauty and courage, she was famously described as “the most beautiful woman in east Japan.” During the 1590 Siege of Odawara, she became legendary for helping defend Oshi Castle against the forces of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. When Ishida Mitsunari attempted to flood the castle by constructing embankments, Kaihime reportedly destroyed the dikes, causing severe damage to the Toyotomi army. She later led a mounted counterattack with around 200 soldiers, boosting morale among the defenders and forcing Mitsunari into retreat. His failure at Oshi Castle damaged his reputation and contributed to the distrust that later weakened his position before the Battle of Sekigahara.

After the Hōjō clan surrendered, Kaihime and her father were placed under the care of Gamō Ujisato. During a later internal rebellion, Kaihime again demonstrated her martial skill by killing the rebel leader and suppressing the uprising herself. Impressed by her bravery, Hideyoshi took her as one of his wives, and her father was rewarded with land and status. Years later, during the final stages of the Siege of Osaka, Kaihime is said to have protected the daughter of Toyotomi Hideyori while escaping the burning Osaka Castle. According to tradition, the women later became nuns at Tōkei-ji, closing the story of one of Japan’s most celebrated female samurai.
