Grandma Bumstead is the mother of Mr. Bumstead. Wealthy, haughty, and physically imposing, she represents the "old money" interests of the Bumstead clan.

She is brought in to "handle" the Blondie situation. She views the marriage as a crisis and attempts to force Blondie to marry Pilsbury Bumstead instead of Dagwood in order to keep the family line "refined".

She is aggressive and authoritarian, often using her cane to strike family members (like Pilsbury) to keep them in line.
