Miriam was a prophetess in the Hebrew Bible and the older sister of Moses and Aaron. She was the daughter of Amram and Jochebed and played an important leadership role during the Exodus from Egypt. The Torah calls her “Miriam the Prophetess,” and Jewish tradition recognizes her as one of the seven major female prophets of Israel.

Miriam is first associated with the story of Moses’s infancy, traditionally identified as the sister who watched over him after he was placed in the Nile River. During the Exodus, she leads the Israelite women in song and celebration after the destruction of Pharaoh’s army at the Sea of Reeds, an event known as the Song of the Sea.

According to Jewish tradition and the Midrash, Miriam helped guide and teach the women of Israel, just as Moses taught the men. Alongside Moses and Aaron, she is remembered as one of the leaders chosen by God to help deliver the Israelites from slavery in Egypt.

Later in the biblical narrative, Miriam and Aaron criticize Moses over his Cushite wife and question his unique authority. God rebukes them, affirming Moses’s special role as prophet. Miriam is then afflicted with a skin disease and temporarily excluded from the Israelite camp for seven days before being healed.

Miriam eventually dies in the wilderness at Kadesh in the Desert of Zin, where she is buried. She is remembered as a courageous leader, prophetess, and key figure in the story of the Exodus.
