Benzaiten, also called Benten, is a Japanese Buddhist and Shinto goddess derived from the Hindu goddess Saraswati. She became popular in Japan between the 6th and 8th centuries through Buddhist texts such as the Golden Light Sutra.
Originally associated with speech, music, wisdom, and learning, Benzaiten later became linked with wealth, fortune, protection, water, dragons, and snakes. In Japanese Buddhism, she is considered one of the Twenty-Four Protective Deities and was believed to protect both individuals and the state.
Over time, Benzaiten blended with Japanese Shinto beliefs and local kami. She became identified with the snake deity Ugajin and the Shinto goddess Ichikishima-hime, one of the daughters of Amaterasu. Because of this religious blending, she is worshiped in both Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines across Japan.
Benzaiten is also one of Japan’s famous Seven Lucky Gods, where she is especially associated with prosperity, eloquence, music, and artistic talent.
In art, Benzaiten is commonly shown holding a biwa, a traditional Japanese lute, reflecting her connection to music. Some depictions show her with weapons, jewels, dragons, or white snakes, symbolizing protection, spiritual power, and fortune. A special form called Uga Benzaiten combines her image with the serpent deity Ugajin, often shown as a human-headed white snake above her head.
Benzaiten also developed important roles in Japanese esoteric Buddhism, especially within the Tendai school, where she became associated with enlightenment teachings and mystical symbolism. Her worship later spread beyond Japan, including to parts of Taiwan during the Japanese colonial era.
