Nie Xiaoqian appears in Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio as a ghost renowned not only for her beauty, but also for her talent and natural kindness. Once an eighteen-year-old girl, she died prematurely and was buried beside a ruined temple north of Jinhua in Zhejiang province. In the afterlife, she came under the control of a Yaksha and other yaoguais, who forced her to lure unsuspecting travelers to their deaths.
During one such encounter, she attempted to seduce the scholar Ning Caichen, who had sought shelter at Lanruo Temple. However, Ning’s honesty and compassion deeply affected her, leading her to protect and assist him instead. With Ning’s help, Nie Xiaoqian eventually escaped her demonic masters and found refuge within the Ning household, where she cared for both his mother and his sick wife. After the wife’s passing, Nie Xiaoqian married Ning Caichen, and together they destroyed the yaoguais that had terrorized Jinhua for years. The couple later had a son, and the tale concludes with a sense of peace and domestic happiness.
