Ruth was a Moabite woman who became one of the most admired figures in the Bible because of her loyalty, faithfulness, and devotion to her mother-in-law, Naomi.

After Ruth's husband, Mahlon, died in Moab, Naomi decided to return to Bethlehem. While Naomi encouraged her daughters-in-law to remain in Moab, Ruth chose to stay with Naomi, declaring that Naomi's people would be her people and Naomi's God would be her God. This commitment is one of the most famous expressions of loyalty in Scripture.

Back in Bethlehem, Ruth supported herself and Naomi by gleaning leftover grain from the fields during the harvest. She worked in the fields of Boaz, a wealthy relative of Naomi's deceased husband. Impressed by Ruth's character, kindness, and dedication to Naomi, Boaz treated her generously and protected her.

As a kinsman-redeemer—a close relative with the responsibility to preserve a family line—Boaz eventually redeemed Naomi's family property and married Ruth after a closer relative declined the opportunity. Their marriage provided security for Ruth and Naomi and restored the family's future.

Ruth and Boaz had a son named Obed. Obed became the father of Jesse, who became the father of King David. As a result, Ruth, though a foreigner from Moab, became the great-grandmother of King David and an important ancestor in the royal line of Israel.
