In Norse mythology, Sól is the goddess who personifies the sun and illuminates the world as she rides across the sky in a chariot drawn by the horses Árvakr and Alsviðr. The daughter of Mundilfari and sister of the moon god Máni, Sól was placed in the heavens by the gods to guide the sun’s daily course and mark the passage of time for humanity. Throughout her journey, she is relentlessly pursued by the wolf Sköll, whose eventual capture and devouring of her is foretold to occur during Ragnarök, the cataclysmic end of the world. Despite this fate, Sól’s legacy endures, as her daughter is destined to take her place and continue the sun’s path across the heavens after Ragnarök. As one of the most important celestial figures in Norse cosmology, Sól represents light, order, and the cyclical renewal of life.
