Buck Buckley is the wagon train guide who serves as a steady, level-headed counterpart to Rose Dawson. While Rose is known for her toughness and impulsive nature, Buck consistently tries to help and protect those around him, including warning Rose about the dangers posed by her rival, Benson.

Although Rose initially dismisses Buck and treats him with some disdain, he remains loyal and concerned for her welfare. When Rose is wounded after falling into one of Benson's traps, Buck takes action by leading a group of settlers in a surprise attack that captures Benson's henchmen and saves her.

By the story's conclusion, Buck's courage, reliability, and admiration for Rose help earn her respect. After Rose decides to donate her land to the settlers, Buck stays nearby, and the two appear poised to begin a romantic relationship built on mutual respect and shared values.
