Dr. Jon Dale was an American scientist who accidentally discovered Camilla's hidden empire after being carried into the region by an elephant. Intelligent, courageous, and morally principled, Jon was fascinated by the kingdom's mysteries but deeply disturbed by its practice of human sacrifice. Camilla became romantically interested in him and hoped he would remain as her king, but Jon refused, valuing his independence and rejecting the empire's brutal customs. When Camilla targeted Ruth Birch for sacrifice, Jon risked his life to save her by sabotaging the ritual. Throughout his adventures, he consistently opposed the misuse of power and immortality, even rejecting Camilla's secret of eternal life and vowing to destroy it.

Camilla's growing cruelty eventually leads to her exile from the kingdom she once ruled. During her wanderings, she encounters Jon Dale and Ruth Birch again and uses her mystical powers to transform Jon into a statue of ice. She then gives Ruth an ultimatum: help her locate a new Fountain of Youth, and Jon will be restored. The two women embark on the quest and ultimately discover the life-giving spring. After drinking from its waters, Camilla regains her immortality, and Jon is returned to human form. Recognizing that Camilla has changed for the better, Jon and Ruth persuade her people to forgive her and restore her to the throne, a request they willingly grant.
