The Calydonian Boar was a monstrous wild boar sent by Artemis to punish King Oeneus after he neglected to honor her in a harvest sacrifice. The beast ravaged the countryside of Calydon, destroying crops, vineyards, and livestock while terrifying the local population.

To stop the creature, Oeneus organized the famous Calydonian Boar Hunt, which attracted many of Greece's greatest heroes, including Meleager and the huntress Atalanta. Atalanta was the first to wound the boar with an arrow, while Meleager ultimately delivered the killing blow.

After the hunt, a dispute arose over who deserved the boar's hide and tusks. Meleager awarded them to Atalanta for drawing first blood, but other hunters objected because she was a woman. The resulting conflict led to several deaths, including Meleager's, fulfilling Artemis's revenge.
