Phoebe was one of the original Titans in Greek mythology, born to Uranus (Sky) and Gaia (Earth). Her name means “bright” or “radiant,” and she was associated with intellect, wisdom, and prophecy. Phoebe was married to her brother Coeus, and together they had two daughters, Leto and Asteria. Through Leto, Phoebe became the grandmother of Apollo and Artemis, while through Asteria she became the grandmother of Hecate.

According to Greek tradition, Phoebe once possessed the Oracle of Delphi and later gifted it to her grandson Apollo, helping establish his role as the god of prophecy. Although her name was later connected to lunar deities such as Artemis and the Roman goddess Diana, Phoebe herself was not originally worshipped as a moon goddess.

She appears only rarely in ancient art, most notably on the Pergamon Altar, where she is depicted fighting Giants alongside her daughter Asteria. Her legacy survives today through the popular feminine name Phoebe and the moon of Saturn named in her honor.
