Alecto is one of the three Erinyes, or Furies, in Greek and Roman mythology, best known in Roman tradition alongside her sisters Tisiphone and Megaera. Originally described as a daughter of Gaea, born from the blood of Uranus after his castration by Cronus, Alecto embodies unrelenting anger and vengeance. She is typically depicted with snakes for hair, wings, and blood dripping from her eyes. Her role is to punish humans for moral crimes—particularly those committed against other people—by driving them into madness, distinguishing her from Nemesis, who punishes offenses against the gods.

In Virgil's Aeneid, the goddess Juno sends Alecto to prevent the Trojans from peacefully settling in Italy. Alecto spreads chaos by possessing Queen Amata and inciting her to rally the Latin women against the Trojans. She also appears to Turnus in a dream, urging him to wage war. When persuasion fails, she strikes him with a fiery torch, filling him with an uncontrollable desire for battle. After successfully igniting the conflict, Alecto asks Juno if she should continue spreading discord, but Juno tells her that the remaining course of the war will be handled without her intervention.
