Tisiphone, whose name means "Avenger of Murder," is one of the three Erinyes, or Furies, in Greek and Roman mythology, alongside her sisters Alecto and Megaera. Dwelling in the underworld, the Furies pursue and punish those guilty of serious crimes, particularly murder, including parricide, fratricide, and homicide. Tisiphone is often depicted as a fearsome figure with snakes for hair and bloodstained garments, symbolizing relentless vengeance.

In classical literature, Tisiphone frequently appears as an agent of madness, punishment, and war. Virgil portrays her as the guardian of Tartarus and a force driving violence on the battlefield, while Ovid describes her using serpents and deadly poison to drive Athamas and Ino insane. In Statius' Thebaid, she incites the war between Polynices and Eteocles and drives the hero Tydeus into cannibalism. She also appears in works by Chaucer and Dante, where she continues to represent divine vengeance and the terrifying consequences of guilt and violence. One myth also tells of her unrequited love for the mortal Cithaeron, whom she kills with a venomous serpent created from her own hair after he rejects her.
