Megaera, whose name means "the jealous one," is one of the three Erinyes, or Furies, in Greek and Roman mythology, alongside Alecto and Tisiphone. Depending on the tradition, she is described either as the daughter of Nyx and Acheron or as one of the beings born from the blood of Uranus after his castration by Cronus. Like her sisters, Megaera is a spirit of vengeance who punishes wrongdoing and moral crimes. Her name has endured in several modern languages, where it has come to describe a jealous, spiteful, or ill-tempered woman. She should not be confused with Megara, the wife of Heracles.
