Kate Nickleby is Nicholas's kind, loyal, and resilient younger sister. After her father's death leaves the family in poverty, she and her mother depend on their wealthy uncle, Ralph Nickleby, for support. Rather than helping them with compassion, Ralph places Kate in difficult and degrading situations for his own benefit.

Kate first works in a milliner's shop, where she is overworked and treated unfairly. Later, Ralph encourages her to associate with wealthy, immoral men, including Sir Mulberry Hawk, who repeatedly harasses her. Despite pressure to submit to their advances, Kate remains steadfast, refusing to compromise her dignity. Her courage eventually prompts Nicholas to confront those responsible for her mistreatment.

After leaving these exploitative situations, Kate finds safety and stability through the generosity of the Cheeryble brothers and their family. She later falls in love with and marries Frank Cheeryble, marking the beginning of a happier life.
