Madeline Bray is a kind, gentle, and selfless young woman who becomes one of the novel's central heroines. Living in poverty, she devotes herself to caring for her sick, debt-ridden father, making personal sacrifices to support him despite their desperate circumstances.

Her family's financial struggles make her the target of Ralph Nickleby's schemes. Ralph and the miser Arthur Gride attempt to force Madeline into a loveless marriage with Gride so they can gain access to her inheritance. Although she feels trapped by her father's debts and failing health, Madeline refuses to marry for wealth or status and remains true to her values.

Nicholas Nickleby intervenes to stop the marriage and offers Madeline the support and protection she has long lacked. After her father dies, freed from Ralph's manipulation, Madeline and Nicholas fall in love and eventually marry.
