Mrs. Catherine Nickleby is the widowed mother of Nicholas and Kate Nickleby. After her husband's death leaves the family in poverty, she relies on her children and the reluctant support of her wealthy brother-in-law, Ralph Nickleby. Although she deeply loves Nicholas and Kate, she is often unable to recognize the dangers and hardships they face until others point them out.

Mrs. Nickleby is kind-hearted but absent-minded, frequently becoming distracted by long-winded stories, unrealistic ideas, and irrelevant observations. Her stubbornness and tendency to misunderstand situations often complicate her children's efforts to escape Ralph's manipulation and the hardships they endure. These traits provide much of the novel's comic relief, balancing the darker events of the story.

Despite her flaws, Mrs. Nickleby remains a devoted mother whose greatest concern is the well-being of her family. As Nicholas secures a stable future for them with the help of the Cheeryble brothers, she is finally able to leave behind the uncertainty and poverty that defined much of her life.
