Leo Vincey is the central figure of the adventure after learning that he has inherited a generations-old quest from his father. Along with his guardian, Horace Holly, he travels to Africa to uncover the truth behind an ancient prophecy that claims he is the reincarnation of Kallikrates, a man murdered over two thousand years earlier by the immortal queen Ayesha. During the journey, Leo survives a shipwreck, earns the devotion of Ustane, and recovers from serious injuries with Ayesha's supernatural healing powers. Ayesha becomes convinced that Leo is her long-lost lover reborn and plans to make him immortal so they can rule together forever. However, when she steps into the Pillar of Fire a second time to demonstrate its power, she instead loses her immortality and dies. After witnessing Ayesha's tragic end and the collapse of her dreams, Leo leaves the lost city of Kôr with Holly and returns to Cambridge, deeply changed by the extraordinary events he has experienced.
