Kanna Fuchi (also spelled as Kamuy-huci) is the Ainu goddess of the hearth and one of the most important kamuy (divine spirits) in Ainu mythology. Also known as Iresu Kamuy ("People's Teacher"), she serves as the guardian of the household and the intermediary between the human world and the world of the kamuy. According to Ainu tradition, she brought fire to humanity, taught women how to make sacred girdles (kut), and oversees domestic life, rewarding proper conduct while punishing those who disrespect the hearth. The hearth itself was considered sacred, functioning as both a gateway for communication with the kamuy and the dwelling place of ancestral spirits. Legends of her origin vary, with some describing her descent from heaven alongside Kanna Kamuy, the thunder and lightning deity, while others portray her as born from the fire drill or as the daughter of an elm tree.
