Playboy Ray Cardell was looking through his telescope one evening when he was suddenly struck by an unknown beam of energy. After being exposed to this mysterious energy, Ray gains X-ray vision and the ability to paralyze and burn people with eye beams. He believed his new powers will "strike terror into the hearts of the most hardened criminals", so Ray becomes the crime fighter Master Key.

His origin was later changed to the source of his powers being from an explosion caused by a short circuit instead of unknown space rays.

On the cover of Punch Comics #21, He is shown fighting a sinister, genie-like being who dwells within a magic lamp and on another cover is shown saving a glamorous young woman from a green skinned ghoul in a attic filled with spiders.
