Gordon Summers and Harold "Red" Crandall were ex-commandos, members of the Black Raider Battalion who, after being wounded on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, were discharged back to civilian lives. Bored living their lives as civilians, they removed all insignia from their former commando uniforms, added masks and began their crusade against crime in the city, with Summers acting as leader. Their enemies included Shylock Greene, The Crime Merchant and "The Master of Birds."

The Black Raiders were excellent fighters but the fact they didn't carry any weapons frequently gave their opponents an advantage. They were somehow able to trace the license plate on cars.
