George Hale was a reporter for the ''Herald'', a newspaper based in an unknown American city. His co-workers dismissed him because he was prone to flights of fancy, rarely got any good leads and took "energy pills" to make up for being a "weakling." But all that changed when he investigated the murder plot against a group of scientists working for the U.S. Department of War. He learned that Professor Langreth was the murderous gang's next target. While he wasn't able to save the professor's life, Langreth survived long enough to hand George his greatest invention - pills that granted temporary invisibility. Since then, George went on to use the pills to investigate crimes and foreign plots against United States. He reported on the crimes as soon as he solved them, much to the annoyance of his colleagues, who could not figure out how the previously inept reporter was able to get all those scoops. George was often aided by his fellow ''Herald'' reporter (and later girlfriend) Vicky Dale.

Professor Langreth's pills gave George Hale temporary invisibility that lasted for as long as it was convenient to the plot. The pill triggered a chemical reaction that enveloped him in a puff of smoke before making him completely invisible. Since Professor Langreth didn't give George the formula to make the pills, he was presumably limited to the pills he got from the professor, but the stories never addressed this potential plot point. During preliminary investigations of crimes, George would often use elaborate disguises to gain information (an old lady delivering vegetables, a Chinaman, and an Italian fruit peddler).

*The Nedor comics [http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/cce/firstperiod.html were renewed] by Popular Library, which was eventually bought out by Fawcett Books. When Fawcett went out of business, Popular Library was sold to Warner Bros. A number of different publishers, however, are currently/have been using these characters without any lawsuits from Warner Bros., so any action over them is (probably) unlikely. They are still, however, "use at your own risk" characters.
