Annie Oakley was a female American sharpshooter and performer who became a star in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. She was given the name "Little Sure Shot" by Sitting Bull, who also toured with the show. She had been a hunter and trapper for most of her life, before joining the show.

In 1954, a television series based loosely on the historical Annie Oakley (played by Gail Davis) was produced. Beyond her being a great shooter, many aspects of this portrayal were fictitious, including having a brother, being niece to the town sheriff, and the homestead in the fictional town of Diablo, Arizona. Nearly all of the adventures depicted are more typical of Western television than her real-life biography.

Personality-wise, she is energetic, determined, and not content to sit back. Although Sheriff Luke MacTavish is her uncle, he is often away or unavailable when trouble comes to Diablo, leaving Annie to act as its protector. She is frequently the one to lead, rescue neighbors, or remedy problems. She sticks up for the underdog, helps prove the innocent regardless of their background or ethnicity, thwarts outlaws, and generally fights for what is right.

Annie is protective of her little brother Tagg Oakley, who often gets into scrapes or finds himself involved in her escapades. Deputy Sheriff "Lofty" Craig is her close friend and silent suitor; he often helps and sometimes works alongside Annie in resolving issues in Diablo. She also has her trusty steed named Target.

Annie was a skilled sharpshooter. She could shoot a .22 caliber rifle at 90 feet and split a playing card edge-on while putting five or six holes in it before it hit the ground.

Likewise, in the TV series, Annie is portrayed as a phenomenal markswoman. Her shooting skills are used to protect the innocent or to uphold justice.
