Doctor Death was really Dr. Rance Mandarin, a former Yale professor who abandoned his position to become an occult master. The mad Dr. Death now hated science and industrialization, and believed that the world must be returned to the stone age. He used zombies, elementals, dissolution rays, and communists.

However, he was opposed by the Secret Twelve, an organization led by Jimmy Holm, a supernatural detective.
