One of the first costumed and super-powered heroes in the world, possessed perfect night vision, color-shifting irises, and a mechanical heart, making him one of the earliest examples of a fictional cyborg. Born around 1891 or 1892 to Pierre and Madam Saint-Clair, Léon “Leo” Saint-Clair grew up on a wealthy estate outside Paris, excelling as an athlete and often assisting his father with his scientific research. When he was twenty, mercenary Sadi Khan and terrorist Grigoryi Alexandrovich broke into the Saint-Clair home to steal Pierre’s Radiant Z technology, shooting Pierre and blowing up the family lab. Determined to hunt down those responsible and recover the stolen schematics, Leo took control of his family’s fortune and assembled a small team of friends to pursue the culprits across Europe. After an ambush in Switzerland left him with a bullet wound to the forehead, Leo was rescued by nurse Aurora Malianova and surgeon Dr. de Villiers-Pagan. The trauma transformed his eyesight, granting him extraordinary nocturnal vision and earning him the nickname “Nyctalope” (which, in French, refers to an animal with excellent night vision, although in English the same word refers to night-blindness). Later, after being gravely injured once again in his quest, Leo survived only thanks to an experimental operation that replaced his damaged heart with a powerful, magnetically charged mechanical one — a prosthetic that not only kept him alive but also greatly enhanced his strength, endurance, and vitality. Though Leo fell in love with Aurora — later revealed to be Katyushka Garcheva, a Russian spy — he survived her betrayal and went on to establish the C.I.D. (Committee of Information and Defense), dedicating himself to battling spies, terrorists, and supervillains. Throughout his career, the Nyctalope clashed with notorious foes like Baron Von Wartek (also called Lucifer), experienced fleeting romances with women such as Xaviere de Ciserat and Sylvie MacDhul, and even journeyed to Mars to rescue his fiancée from the alien tyrant Orxus. Despite enduring personal losses, including the mysterious fate of his son Pierre, Léon Saint-Clair never abandoned his quest for justice, becoming one of the most remarkable and enduring heroes of his time.

Wells. the mad scientist Oxus seeks revenge for the failed Martian invasion of Earth, which occurred several years prior. Through his secret organization, the XV, he aims to conquer Mars. Jean de La Hire, writing as a biographer of the Nyctalope, refers to Wells as a “historian” who accurately chronicled these events in England.

* In L’Homme qui peut vivre dans l’eau (1908), Jean de La Hire introduces characters later reused in Le Mystère des XV (1911), the first Nyctalope novel. Admiral Louis de Ciserat, who battles the aquatic Hictaners in the earlier book, becomes France’s Minister of the Navy in the 1911 story. The villainous scientist Oxus, leader of the criminal organization The Unknown, returns as the Nyctalope’s archenemy. Notably, Léo Saint-Clair (the Nyctalope himself) is the son of Jean Sainte-Claire a secondary character from the 1908 novel.
* Nyctalope's origin has changed over the course of the stories. Initially, he was presented as the son of Jean Saint-Clair, a French naval officer. However, in later versions, this was retconned, and he was described as the son of the wealthy and renowned scientist Pierre Saint-Clair, who raised him on an estate between Paris and Bourg-la-Reine.
